By 2010, my friend and I are planning to watch the Cherry Blossoms…well…bloom in Hokkaido. Ever since I’ve introduced the idea to her, she got excited, but I wonder if it really is going to come true because we couldn’t find the time to take care of the travel requirements, and given the cost of living nowadays, travelling is pretty much a luxury, even when you’re thinking of staying for only two days. It’s crazy.

Still, I get giddy thinking of donning a yukata just to get the feel of the moment. I’m already taking snapshots in my mind. And I fret about how much battery I would have to purchase for the trip. My luggage would probably be filled with batteries with little room to spare for clothes and keepsakes. I’m already planning to buy hakama pants, though I heard the cost of living there’s really high…I wonder how we’d survive given how the economy’s slumped recently.

I remember Scarlett Johanson in Lost in Translation. I remember that cellphone ad with the guy who took pictures before taking a trip to Japan, just so he could ask people properly. From the very beginning I’ve resolved that I would not learn Japanese even if I had to travel there. Not that I don’t have any intention to. I just want to know how it feels like being stuck somewhere no one could help you because they could not understand. Weird, no? Still, having a friend who’s keen on learning the language might help. She plans on studying Japanese and some other language to mix it with. She asked me how it would probably sound like.

“Buenas Konnichiwa! Me llamo Chi-chi desu.”
“Konnichiwapres-midi! Je m’apelle Chi-chi desu.”

Yes. After giving her an idea on how it might sound like, she realized she’d rather not do that. It was sacrilege against two dignified languages. So she let it go. Still, she’s bent on learning Japanese sometime this year. Hopefully she does. When I might need help in 2010, I didn’t want to have to play charades every time I had to speak with the locals.

But, like I said, how the heck is she going to learn the language if she didn’t have the time? I’ve only recently encountered an audio tutorial she could order from the Internet. It’s called Rocket Japanese. Based on the testimonials, the program seems to bekeen on teaching people from kaput to modern conversational nipongo.

Talking about Rocket Japanese has hyped me up again. I should probably be vigilant about the requirements, given that I only have one year. I should really think about saving money now, and even if my friend loses interest…if lady luck’s on my side, I just might travel to Japan on my on…

…I should be practising charades now, too, then.
